Edward N. “Ted” Hughes, OC, a highly influential public servant and a former judge, passed away on January 17, 2020.

Ted Hughes led an overhaul of BC’s child welfare system, which led to the creation of the office of the province’s independent ombudsman for children and youth. Among many other achievements Ted was appointed as the Chief Adjudicator of the Residential Schools Settlement Program.

Ted and his wife Helen were last year’s recipients of the Janusz Korczak Medal award for Children’s Rights Advocacy. The award honours outstanding contributions to the promotion of the rights of children in ways that encourage love for children, listening to children, fostering healthy children’s lives, and building capacities in children in the spirit of Doctor Korczak.

Mr. and Mrs. Hughes with the Honourable Janet Austin.
